Love MoTo #012 - CAGIVA ELEFANT

Quelque soit  la raison d'acheter une moto, souvent les souvenirs , la nostalgie nous guident lorsqu'il s'agit d'une moto ancienne. Même les constructeurs ne s'y trompent pas et surfent sur la vague néo rétro, ou tout simplement sur l'évocation d'un mythe. Le Paris Dakar des premières heures a influencé beaucoup d'entre nous, et aujourd'hui combien de passions se nouent autour des motos qui évoquent cet événement , 600 TENERE, 500 XT, 80GS autant de référence qui ne diront rien à beaucoup mais qui feront vibrer ceux qui les ont connues dans leur contexte. Le CAGIVA Elefant est un symbole de cette course folle, j'ai possédé toutes les autres mais celle là non, alors au détour du "Bon Coin" un jour, j'ai craqué. Une CAGIVA Elefant 900 AC ( à carbu) dont le moteur était mort. J'ai donc décidé de greffer un moteur de CAGIVA GC à injection, le pape de la BMW Bernard SABATER m'a dit , au début de mon projet : "Vous, vous aimez les ennuis !" il est vrai que beaucoup auraient préféré l'opération exactement inverse, mofifier une injection en carbus....  Mais bon.... j'aime bien les ennuis...  Alors que l'aventure commence !

Whatever the reason for buying a motorcycle, often memorabilia, nostalgia guides us when it comes to an antique motorcycle. Even the manufacturers are not mistaken and surf on the neo retro wave, or quite simply on the evocation of a myth. The Paris Dakar of the first hours influenced many of us, and today how many passions are tied around the motorcycles which evoke this event, 600 TENERE, 500 XT, 80GS as many references which will not say anything to many but which will vibrate those who have known them in their context. The CAGIVA Elefant is a symbol of this mad race, I owned all the others but not this one, so at the turn of the "Bon Coin" one day, I cracked. A CAGIVA Elefant 900 AC (with carburetor) whose engine was dead. So I decided to swap a CAGIVA GC engine with injection, the Pope of the BMW Bernard SABATER said to me, at the beginning of my project: "You, you like trouble!" it is true that many would have preferred the exact opposite operation, modifying an injection into a carb.... But hey.... I like trouble... So let the adventure begin!

Je passe sur les détails interminables de l'adaptation d'un moteur à injection de Gran Canyon sur l'Elefant. d'un point de vue intégration mécanique , pas de problème, mais la refonte du circuit electrique, la re-localisation de l'ECU, et de tous les périphériques, ainsi que l'adaptation du réservoir ,pompe à essence , régulateur de pression , retour au réservoir ont  été , je dois l'avouer , un long casse tête.s'en est suivie la mise au point du moteur, plonger dans les docs techniques, acheter les systèmes de tests pour les mesures de pression, la prise OBD et l'outil de diagnostique DUCATI......  ça a pris ... un peu de temps, Grand merci à beaucoup de personnes qui m'ont soit aigullé techniquement , soit encouragé. Mon ami Claudio en Italie qui m'a aidé a trouver les réseaux pour les pièces manquantes . Quel bonheur quand la moto à démarré !

I skip over the endless details of fitting a Gran Canyon fuel-injected engine to the Elefant. from a mechanical integration point of view, no problem, but the redesign of the electrical circuit, the re-location of the ECU, and all the peripherals, as well as the adaptation of the tank, fuel pump, pressure regulator , returning to the tank was, I must admit, a long headache. This was followed by the fine tuning of the engine, diving into the technical docs, buying the test systems for the pressure measurements, the OBD socket and the DUCATI diagnostic tool... it took... a little time, Big thanks to many people who either gave me technical advice or encouraged me. My friend Claudio in Italy who helped me find the networks for the missing parts. What happiness when the bike started!

Les premiers essais sont en tout-terrain évidemment  et là les amis , ce fut une révélation, chez mon ami Eric, dans les Landes j'ai découvert une moto extraordinaire, elle parait grosse et lourde et pourtant c'est un jouet, un chassis impeccable qui me rappelle le comportement des BARIGO autres motos mythiques. Le moteur du GC est très rageur et souple à la fois, je l'adopte !

The first tests are off-road obviously and there friends, it was a revelation, at my friend Eric's, in the Landes I discovered an extraordinary motorcycle, it seems big and heavy and yet this a toy, an impeccable chassis which reminds me of the behavior of other mythical BARIGO motorcycles. The engine of the GC is very furious and flexible at the same time, I adopt it!

Voila, le défi est relevé, mais moi j'aime bien modifier et je viens de tomber devant le projet DUCATI DESERT X en même temps que le projet MV AGUSTA 9.0 , les deux sont , comme je le disais plus haut, des évocations ( lucratives) du mythe qu'est l'Elefant , alors me vient une idée, moderniser le look de cette Elefant de 1996 et essayer de la rendre plus actuelle mais aussi plus tout-terrain. Je me lance donc dans un re-design de l'arriere , nouveau cadre plus court en treillis tubulaire , nouvelle selle (inspitée je l'avoue de la MV) et nouvelle déco LUCKY EXPLORER.

Here we are ! the challenge is taken up, but I like to modify and I have just come across the DUCATI DESERT X project at the same time as the MV AGUSTA 9.0 project, both are, as I said above, evocations (lucrative ) of the myth that is the Elefant, then an idea comes to me, to modernize the look of this 1996 Elefant and try to make it more modern but also more off-road. I am therefore embarking on a re-design of the rear, new shorter tubular  frame (DUCATI like) , new seat (inspired I admit from the MV) and new LUCKY EXPLORER decoration.

J'ai fabriqué un socle de selle sur mesure sur le nouveau cadre, la selle elle même, en cuir retourné, a été réalisée par Patrick l'excellent sellier Toulousain, les patches latéraux par NINETY EIGHT custom motorcycle.

I made a custom seat base on the new frame, the seat itself, in reversed leather, was made by Patrick the excellent Toulouse saddler, the side patches by NINETY EIGHT custom motorcycle.
